Axminster Town moved into fifth place in the South West Peninsular East League with a 3-2 home victory over Plymouth Marjon on Saturday. It they can hold that position with eight games left to play, it will be the Tigers' best ever performance in Devon's top league.
The victory edged them above nearest rivals, Newton Abbot Spurs, with a three-point advantage but with a game in hand.
The Tigers now have fourth placed Ivybridge Two in their sights. Both teams have played 27 games with Ivybrdge three points ahead.
Saturday's goals came from a Richard Hebditch penalty, Jamie Short and Jamie Price. Hebditch was awarded the man-of-the--match award for another fine all-round performance, presented by main sponsor Brian Deem, of Climax Windows
This coming Saturday Axminster are away to Torrington AFC, who are in 14th place in the table, having won just seven of their 28 games.
*For the first time in the club's history, Axminster Town are through to the semi-finals of the prestigious Walter Parsons Cup. They will meet Premier East high-flyers Okehampton Argyle at Bovey Tracey on Wednesday, March 29th.
The club has organised a coach for supporters which will leave Tiger Way at 6pm, returning between 10.30 pm and 11pm. A £5 fare will be charged with under 18s travelling free.
