LYME Regis Reserves exited the Dorset Intermediate Cup, a trophy they have won on nine occasions in a 3-1 defeat at the Davey Fort on Saturday.

Although there wasn't one dangerous challenge, the game was marred by an over-zealous performance from the referee who issued three yellow cards, one sending off and four sin bins. Many of those disciplined were left wondering what their misdemeanour had been.

There was, however, no doubt about the result. Wool, who play in Dorset Division One, were worthy winners.

They opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds when the referee ordered a free-kick inside the penalty area for a disputed back pass. The Lyme wall lined up on the goal-line and blocked the first attempt but were unable to save the follow-in.

Lyme nearly got back in the game when a fierce drive from Jon Davies was tipped over the bar in the sixth minute.

The visitors dominated the early exchanges and increased their lead to 2-0 following a free-kick which was blocked by the Lyme defence but they failed to deal with the follow-in drive.

The third goal came when stand-in keeper Shaun Sellers was chipped when well outside his area in a bid to deal with a long ball.

First team striker Fred Parsons, suffering from food poisoning, then took over between the sticks and demonstrated he was as much at home in the goalkeeping gloves as he is topping the goal scorers in the first team.

Steve Batey pulled one back for Lyme in the second half but the game soon deteriorated into a series of referee decisions which negated any chance of flowing football with both sides relieved when the final whistle was blown.
