Seasiders do the double over Tigers

Lyme Regis first team completed the double over old adversaries Axminster Town with a 2-0 win on Saturday.

The Seasiders beat Axminster 4-0 at home a few weeks back but the Tigers put up a much stronger defence for the return fixture. Lyme are pushing for a fourth spot in the Devon and Exeter Premier division, but Axe have little to play for other than pride.

Lyme were probably the better side on the day but they were made to fight for the three points. It still leaves them in fifth place, five points behind Kentisbeare but with a game in hand. Lyme have another four games left this season and realistically have to win all of them to sneak into fourth spot.

The early exchanges at Tiger Way were fairly even before Lyme started to exert some pressure on the home defence with Fred Parsons firing a free-kick over the bar after 20 minutes.

Five minutes later Lyme were unlucky not to have taken the league when a Joe Bond header from a Jack Lamb-Wilson cross hit the bar.

The breakthrough came one minute into first half extra-time when Parsons headed down a perfect Mark Bailey corner which was deflected into the net in a desperate effort by an Axminster defender to clear the ball.

Lyme continued to dominate after the break with Parsons going close from another Bailey corner and then Bond headed wide from a Lamb-Wilson cross, possibly one of the best chances in the game.

The highlight of the tussle came in the 60th minute when Axminster manager Jamie Barefoot, who never stopped running throughout, headed in from close range after a brilliant "Gordon Banks-style" save from Lyme keeper Chris Higgs, tipping the ball onto the bar. Barfoot was on the line to head home but was ruled offside.

Lyme chairman Howard Larcombe described Higgs's save as the best he had seen in his long years in local football.

Axminster came more into the game as the final whistle grew closer but Bond completed the 2-0 scoreline with a lob from outside the box.

Callam Garrett worked hard in midfield against his old club and was rewarded with a trip to hospital after the game to have six stitches inserted in his tongue after he was smacked in the face in a robust tackle.

Lamb-Wilson also looked dangerous with strong running and decisive balls into the box.
