Hard-earned points keeps Lyme Reserves in third place

FOLLOWING heavy rain, Lyme Regis Reserves' home match against Honiton Town 2nds was switched to the Woodroffe School top pitch.

The game started well for Lyme, getting into the final third on numerous occasions, but they were unable to create the last action and get a shot on target.

After a while the pressure told and one of a number of great corners from Louis Rinaldi found its way to the back post where Zak Harrison controlled the ball and fired it in past the keeper, his first goal for the club.

Lyme went on the attack again quickly and had several nearly moments without creating anything of note.

Inevitably,  Honiton had a spell of possession in the middle of the first half where they had one or two chances and when Wallace Blackmore slipped on the edge of the box, their winger was left in acres of space and slotted the ball well past hime keeper Jim Larcombe to make it 1-1.

Lyme soon regained control and certainly had the better of the first half, having much more of the ball and being really composed on it.

After the restart, with the condition of the school pitch deteriorating, coupled with Honiton raising their game, it became a really even game.

The Seasiders continued to get into dangerous positions, but failed to  get a clean strike on goal. The chance to regain the lead came when a Honiton player handled the ball just inside the box and Lyme  were awarded a penalty.  Louis Rinaldi fired it towards the left corner for it to cannon off the post and land at the feet of a Honiton defender to clear.

Honiton really started creating chances at this point and their centre-forward picked up the ball 25 yards out and drove through the Lyme defence to fire the ball home to give Honiton the lead.

This then lead to a really open game as Lyme tried to create an opportunity to level the game.  Jim Larcombe, playing his first game for the Reserves in many years, pulled off a wonderful save one-on-one with Honiton's talented winger, one of three or four players who didn't look like regulars in a team which has struggled for results this season.

Lyme's pressure eventually told as Ben Bowditch, who worked tirelessly once again, sent in a cross which evaded the on-rushing keeper, and Robbie Fowler was there to control the ball and place it into an empty net to level the scores at 2-2.

After the game, manager Matt Preece commented: "On balance, a draw was probably the fairest result and we can be happy we managed to rescue a point. But if we can start to convert our possession into clear chances, we will start turning some of these losses into draws and draws into wins. It was a shame we had to play away from the Davey Fort as we have been fantastic at home this year and the top pitch was a bit of a leveller."
