The March Medals at Axe Cliff Golf Club were well attended and well played in the first week of the month when the weather was good but cold.
Luckily for the Seniors our latest nonagenarian Dog Sinton didn't either play or decided to give the rest of us a chance for a change. If your name was Richard you would have had a good game. Richard Chambers in Division One won with a nett 69 . He was closely followed by a relatively new member to the Seniors, Richard Gibbons, obviously enjoying his retirement I believe, on nett 70. Dave Morgan, having a break from lambing, was third on the podium with a 71.
You wont be surprised to learn that another Richard, Mr Bush, won Division Two with a fine 68 but I have to say that he was lucky because I too had a 68 which should have been a 64 or better. Having played well for 16 holes, I then decided to have a wobbly on the last two holes, taking three shots from 50 yards to get on the 17th over the last 60 yards to finish with a terrible seven, being three over par.
Even worse on the 18th when nearly driving the difficult 18 but ending up near the clubhouse as it ran back down the hill and then taking another four shots to finally get on the green and ending with another seven on the par 3 three. In my defence my hands were pretty cold by then or that was my excuse. Chris Walker took third spot with a 70.
Richard's son, Harvey Gibbons, won Division One for the Men's Section with a solid 69. Matt Hall and Mike Cottam pushed him all the way to take second and third respectively on 70 apiece.
Daniel Taylor had a fantastic day, taking the honours for Division Two with an eight below par of nett 62 and will surely find his handicap cut as a result. David Hales and Brian Waller must have been pleased with their net 67s apiece but they had to be satisfied being second and third separated on countback."
