A return to football was celebrated with a comfortable 2 - 0 victory for Uplyme 1st in Perry Street Division Two on Saturday.

Even on a pitch made incredibly tricky from overnight rain, the team stuck to their principles of passing, movement and shape, against a Chard team fielding a number of premier players.

The opening goal came from a pinpoint corner from skipper Jonnie Harris, with Fin Mclean meeting it with a bullet header.

Chard had no answer to the constant pressure coming from the midfield trio of Mclean, Daley Holmes and Ben Prosser.

Before half-time, Uplyme scored a deserved second, when a through ball from Harris wasn't dealt with and Niall Fifer anticipated brilliantly, darting in front of the advancing keeper and tucking away his sixth goal of the season.

The second half became a little bogged down on the worsening pitch, but there was still plenty of attacking flair on show from Souter-Phillips, Sladen and Fifer.

The management team of Gillan and Blandamer were delighted with the win and clean sheet.

Blandamer said: "A great team performance today, mature, managed the game perfectly and didn't get phased by any robust challenges."

New signing Alex Shute looked very impressive at the back, but the drive of the middle 3 of Holmes, Mclean and Prosser provided the drive and control needed against a physical Chard side.

This victory keeps Uplyme in second place in the table behind Forton Rangers Reserves.

Uplyme 1st's next league game is away to Shepton Beachamp Reserves on Saturday, December 19th. Uplyme Reserves are at home to Combe St Nicholas A this coming Saturday in Perry Street Division Three.
