Axminster Town continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Newton Abbot Spurs at Tiger Way on Saturday.

The game was watched by a large crowd, boosted by the club inviting all their youth team players and family who were given free admission to the ground.

The Tigers were not at their best in a scrappy game but goals from Joe Chamberlain and Craig Veal were enough to maintain the Tigers' 100 per cent record with maximum points from their first four games. Sponsors The York Inn awarded the man-of-the-match award to Lewis Waldy.

Manager Dan Prettejohn said after. the game: "Another three points when not playing at our best. A scrappy game but with two superb goals to secure the three points. A win is a win.

"We have a quick turnaround for Tuesday at home to Elmore and despite missing a few of the lads our momentum is key. The great gate today gave the lads a lift and I am looking forward to a big crowd on Tuesday evening to cheer on the Tigers."

Axminster slip into second place with the South West Peninsular League Premier East division as new leaders, Ivybridge, on goal average only, have played one more game.

As well as meeting Elmore tonight (Tuesday), Axe also entertain near rivals Sidmouth Town on Friday evening (kick-off 7.30pm) when another large crowd is expected for the local. derby.

In the first round of the Bayside Graphics Devon St Luke's Bowl Axminster have been drawn at home to Elmore on Tuesday, September 27 (kick-off 7.30 pm).
