Good turn out for the Men's May Medal at Axe Cliff
Good turn out for the Men's May Medal at Axe Cliff

Axe Cliff Golf Club Seniors had a busy and successful week starting off by beating Exeter Golf & Country Club 3.5 - 1.5 in their home tie in Devon's Emerton Court first round.

This is our equivalent to the FA cup played on a home and away basis. The away match takes place this week so good luck lads - just two more points wanted.

There was a good turnout for our May Medal last Friday on a lovely dry day but we still needed our jumpers with a brisk North Easterly to contend with . The wet weather lately has certainly made the grass grow just off the fairway especially in the light rough but its all about keeping it on the fairway, I'm told. Simon Wellington, whose Mum is 100 this week celebrated by winning Division One with a solid nett 73 on countback from Nigel Pritchard leaving Mike Chadwick to pick up third place one shot behind on a 73.

Division Two saw numbers man Roger Hill take first place with a nett 73 just in front of John " Giovanni" Hanna on 74 and Chris Walker took third spot with a 79.

In the Men's section we saw some great scores in their Medal with Lewis Cottam taking Division One by storm with a fine 68 from Luke Snell on 72 and Ian Burraston coming third, also on 72. Ben Libby was on fire winning Division Two with a fantastic, seven below par , nett 63, well beating Alex Taylor who had a very respectable 68 . Chris Glover was not far behind in third place with 71.

It's good to be young especially when you win Mashers Roll Up as did 19 year-old Dan Hellier with 37 points. Normally he is pulling our pints behind the bar but we let him out occasionally with good sober behaviour. Nigel Tarr, not so young, pushed him all the way with 36 to take second place from Paul Clode, also on 36 but beaten on countback.

It's always good to play with new members as Mark Wisby and I did in the Seniors Medal with Richard Chambers. Richard only joined us in 2022 having moved with his lovely partner Nicola from High Wycombe in 2021 to Seaton as they wanted to be near the Sea and they love it. So I took a picture of him overlooking Seaton Bay from the 10th Tee

I think he has only just come back to golf and last played in 2007, but he is going to be one to look out for as he hits the ball a country mile but not always in the right direction! I am pleased to say he finished in the top 10 with a fine nett 76. He told me he has had a number of jobs but the one he liked the most was a Postie for some 10 years so I hope he has met our top Postie Paul Clode still working in Seaton's Mail Room. Richard is a keen Arsenal supporter and is still hoping for the best but Manchester City seem unstoppable.
