Presentation Day at Axe Cliff Golf Club

Friday the 13th last week stayed lucky for the Seniors at Axe Cliff Golf Club for the Trophy Presentation Day, held after a Shotgun start played as an individual Stableford game beforehand.

Luckily, despite all the rain during the week, the Seniors were able to play but sadly no buggies allowed as was too slippery. The morning was dry but a strong wind made the going a challenge with Nigel Pritchard taking the honours.

They all got into the clubhouse for the presentation just after 1pm to see the wonderful Trophy Presentation table prepared by ex-captain, David Lacey and Dave Bruce, who organised the engravings and mementoes.

Amongst the many winners were David's choices of Player of the Year and Clubman of the year being Gilbert Cox and Tony Snell respectively. Gilbert, now in his 80s, was chosen because not only did he do well in winning a few trophies but is so supportive of the section and club throughout the year and "quietly" goes about his business.

Tony was another good choice as not only a good player but does some two or three days a week volunteering to help keeping the course in tip-top condition and is often seen out mowing the fairways and rough. The club is blessed with so many volunteers at Axe Cliff.

New captain Steve Thompson announced the individual winners and David Lacey presented them being his last job as outgoing captain.

I must give special mention of Stuart Mackie and Paul Curtin. Stuart had a very successful year and I had to give hima big box to take all his trophies home. Paul was our Masters Champion which I consider to be the most difficult of our many competitions as it is, like the professional one, played as a Medal over four consecutive rounds and all 72 holes count which is quite a feat for Seniors.

The Ladies got off to a good start in the New Year and enjoyed reasonable conditions in their annual Hangover Cup played over 15 holes but found the ground heavy going. Director Jo Hopgood won this year with 24 points, Stella Thompson took second spot with 21 and Margaret Kenchington was third on 20 ."
