Last week both the Ladies and the Seniors at Axe Cliff Golf Club had reasonable weather or, at least, they did not get wet.

The Ladies held their qualifying round to see which two pairs will represent the club at the County Express & Echo Shield to be held later in September at Exeter Golf & Country Club. They all fought well with the winners being the strong pairing of Caroline Bond and Jill Wellington with 32 points .

The second successful team, also much fancied, was professionally-trained Stella Thompson and, on-form Karin Cox with 28 points. Good luck girls in September.

Last Friday saw some 40-plus Seniors take part in the prestigious Lavarack Stick for those 70 or older on the day. If they were younger, they were just in for the prize money for the Stableford divisions. The Lavarack Stick is normally displayed on

a wall in the clubhouse as its an old hickory walking stick presented to the section in 1977 by one Frederick Lavarack.

At the moment it's in Dave Bruce's house, along with all the other trophies waiting to be presented to all the winners of 2020. The club will soon be able to organise a Presentation Day now COVID restrictions are being lifted.

No problem with the age restriction with Octogenarian Gerry Turner who getting the trophy from last year's winner, another Octogenarian, Sid Pember, with a fine 33 points. In second place was favourite Brian Thompson, being his first eligible attempt since reaching 70 in January.

He came very close on 32 points and must have missed a short putt somewhere in the competition. Dave Evans took third place with a solid 31 points.

Paul Curtin was top in Division 1 with 32 points and looks forward to being eligible in a couple of years time, about the same time as Peter Casey who won Division 2 with 30 points.
