UPLYME 1sts kicked off their first season in the Devon and Exeter League Division Six at home to a strong and quick Broadclyst side.

Uplyme started much stronger and in the first 15 minutes had a number of good chances to go ahead. However, it was Broadclyst, using the ball over the top to their powerful striker, who edged ahead.

Uplyme drew level through Alex Jones after he powered through the defence to slot home. Both teams were awarded a penalty, but the Uplyme spot-kick was saved and the game turned on this.

As the game went on into the second half, Uplyme would rue their missed chances as Broadclyst were more ruthless in front of goal, going ahead before Jonny Day slid onto a Daley Holmes cross to give Uplyme a glimmer of hope at 4-2.

A defensive mix-up, however, put the game out if reach and it finished 5 - 2.

Manager Steve Gillan said: "It was a very promising debut in the league for us and we are sure to improve as the season continues. We were missing some key players at the back and it showed at crucial times. We need to sharpen our passing, communication and finishing if we are to get better outcomes."
