A series of free bat detecting walks are planned at three sites in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as part of an ongoing programme of events to mark its 60th anniversary.

Exploring a range of habitats, including farmland, meadow, riverside and trees on an ancient iron age hillfort, these magical night time walks will be led by Sarah Butcher, local bat expert from Devon Bat Group.

These nocturnal explorations are a great chance to learn how to identify bats using hand held bat detectors as well as learning about their fascinating lifestyles and sadly the threats they face.

Three bat species are on the list of the 'Elusive Eight', a list of species that are under serious threat which East Devon AONB have identified and is part of a wider national Nature Recovery Programme. The species are Greater Horseshoe, Bechstein and Grey Longeared Bats.

At these nocturnal wanders under moon-lit skies, you can find out more about them and how we can help increase their numbers. All ages are welcome.

The walks will be held as follows:

Friday, June 23, 9.30pm to 11.30pm, Blackbury Camp, Southleigh

This site is an iron age hillfort with many old oak trees lining the ramparts, perfect homes for bats.

Friday, July 14, 9pm to 11pm, River Lim riverside path, Uplyme

Rivers offer excellent navigation routes for bats as well as food from emerging insects.

Click here to book, or email [email protected]  or call 01297 489741.

Saturday, July 22, 8.45pm to 10.45pm, Bolshayne Farm, Colyton

The farm includes Bolshayne Fen, a wet meadow which is an SSSI (site of special scientific interest), also hedgerows, and woodland edge which all offer great habitat for bats.

Click here to book, or email [email protected]  or call 01297 489741.

These events are being held as part of the East Devon AONBs 60th anniversary year, celebrating the landscape and building community connections with nature.
