WATCH: Coastguards called to 'stranded dolphin' which turned out to be giant tuna!

Local News by Francesca Evans 18th Sep 2020

Beer coastguards were called to assist colleagues in Exmouth earlier this week with what was thought to be a stranded dolphin, but actually turned how to be 10-foot long tuna.

The Beer team were called a 6.06pm on Wednesday, as there was a group of about 50 to 60 people in the water off Exmouth trying to catch a glimpse of what they believed to be a dolphin.

Arriving on scene it was clear that there were not that many people in the sea, but it was not a stranded dolphin - it was a large tuna estimated to be 10 feet in length and not stranded.

The fish was captured on camera by nearby paddlboarders.

As no persons were in difficult and and all safe we were stood down.

This was Beer coastguards' third call-out of the day. They were earlier called to an overdue swimmer at Sidmouth which turned out to be a false alarm with good intent, and they assisted the ambulance service with a woman who had broken her leg on the coast path at Salcombe Hill, near Sidmouth.
