Big crowds turn out in bitter cold for the switch-on of Seaton Christmas lights
Hundreds of people braved the bitter cold on Saturday evening to get Seaton's Christmas celebrations off to a flying start.
A huge crowd gathered in the square at the bottom of Fore Street to see the Mayor of Seaton, Cllr Dan Ledger, officially switch on the Christmas lights.
Before the ceremony the crowd, estimated to be well over 1,000 people, were entertained by a display by the Seaton Majorettes who received warm applause from those waiting to see the lights turned on.
Before performing the honours, Cllr Ledger, surrounded by his Christmas helpers, thanked everyone for turning up on such a cold evening.
He thanked all those who had worked so hard to put the programme together, especially Seaton Carnival Committee and Seaton Town Council.
With the huge Christmas tree in the square illuminated, the crowd was entertained by the Sunshine Samba Band before a special Christmas carnival procession made its way through town, led by Father Christmas.
Many of the local shops and businesses stayed open for hospitality and late-night shopping and at Seaton Tramway the popular Polar Express operated hourly.
