THOSE who frequented the hostelries of Charmouth and Lyme Regis in years passed will recall one of the area's most popular and hard working pub characters – Dave Smith.

Known affectionately as "Gut and Belt" because of his ample waistline, Dave worked as a barman at a number of locals, most notably the Coach and Horses in Charmouth when it was run by Charlie Sargent and his family.

When Mr Sargent moved to the Royal Standard on the seafront of Lyme Regis, Dave travelled with him.

But there was more to Dave than pulling pints. Charmouth born and bred, Dave was secretary of the local football club for many seasons and he also used his organisational skills to good effect by looking after the secretarial work for Lyme Regis Skittles League and Lyme Regis Darts League, making himself one of the most popular characters in the area.

Dave's memory will be honoured by the staging of the Dave Smith Memorial Darts tournament, organised by the Darts League and the Nags Head.

The tournament, opened to all comers and players of all abilities, will be held at the Nags next Thursday, January 12, with registration at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

The entry fee is £2.
