LYME Regis Reserves brushed away the cobwebs after Saturday's 5-2 defeat at Teigmouth to run riot this afternoon (Monday) with a 8-0 victory over Devon and Exeter League Division One East opponents Otterton.

Prior to this afternoon's game, the Seasiders' second string were placed at the foot of the COVID-reset table and Otterton were in fourth position.

So this victory, which saw some fantastic goals, will boost confidence in their bid to climb the table and send a message to their fellow Division One sides that they will be no push over in the run-in to the season's end.

This was also the game which demonstrated that their youngest player, 16-year-old Josh Daines, the scorer of four of the goals, is destined to play at much higher standard and will be knocking on the first team door if he maintains this form.

He's one of the most existing prospects Lyme have had in their charge for a long time and no one was more pleased to see him put in such a classy performance than management duo Matt Preece and Dec Ellis.

Lyme got off to an explosive start, taking the lead after just 40 seconds, when Daines slipped the ball home from a Brad Rowe pin-point cross.

Goal number two came within two minutes from the same front runners with Rowe providing the assist and Daines volleying the ball past a helpless visiting keeper.

Lyme built on the encouraging start with a third goal in the 16th minute when Tom Bastin slammed the ball home from close-range and finished the first half with a five- goal advantage with a Brad Rowe volley and Daines completing his hat-trick with clinical finish after a sprint down the right.

After such a commanding first half, Lyme were in a position to use all their subs and immediately went on the attack with Tom Bastin rattling the woodwork with a fierce header.

Rowe, who looked dangerous with every forage on the Otterton goal, took the Lyme lead to 6-0 when he stopped inside and rifled the ball home with consummate ease.

Substitute defender Wally Blackmore got in on the act with a tap-in from a Ben Vine corner to make it 7-0 and it was left to the rampant Daines to completed the 8-0 thrashing with possibly the best goal of the game.

He received the ball on his chest and half-volleyed it home from 20 yards. It was a superb strike.

Lyme Regis Reserves will be at home to Clyst Valley 2nds, who are sitting in fifth place in the Division One East table, next Saturday (April 10th) when management duo Preece and Ellis, whose enthusiasm is clear to see, will be looking for another good performance.
