A CUP game for Uplyme 1sts meant they welcomed Tavyside FC, unbeaten in their respective West Devon league and in excellent form according to their coaching team.

But they knew within a minute they had a game on their hands when Alex Jones, from the right-hand side of the penalty box,  played in Daley Holmes, who slotted in a clinical finish to put the Swallows one up.

Tavyside equalised through a scruffy corner - always an Uplyme achilles heel - and thought they were back in the game, but the home side clicked up another gear and skipper Wes Holmes scored a bullet header from a pinpoint Daley Holmes' corner.

Into the second half and the away team kept trying to find their strong veteran striker with a longer ball in the channels, but the pairing of Lorcan Hankin and Cody Bowditch were just too strong and skillful. However, all the possession needed more results and it came through a wonderstrike from Ben Prosser, who turned and smashed the ball into the roof of the net from an impossibly tight angle.

Jonny Day then scored a great far-post header from a trademark Daley Holmes' cross. Tavyside threw everything forward and their captain won an incredulous penalty after the ref judged Bowditch had kicked out.

Again, the spirit and control of Uplyme shone through and Day finished off the game with an identical headed finish for a 5 - 2 scoreline.

Managers Gillan and Blandamer were overjoyed: "It's everything we spoke about before the game. The visitors came here super-confident and rightly so as they were unbeaten. But we were superior everywhere and in every aspect. We ran harder, passed sharper, thought quicker, finished better and stood shoulder to shoulder for 90 minutes. That was a complete performance.

"Stand-out performances right across the pitch makes it unfair to pick out a single player for a man-of-the -match, but Daley Holmes is in cracking form in both finishing and delivery, right now."

On Saturday Uplyme return to league football are at home to University 7th who are one place above them in Devon and Exeter Division Six.
