Axe Cliff Ladies have been busy over the past two weeks enduring a mixture of weather as well.

They were firstly able to hold their annual Centenary Cup in medal format with some good close scores. This year's winner was Karin Cox with a fine net 73, pushed all the way by Paula Heasman, second on net 75, and Stella Thompson, playing with her favourite Srixon balls, taking third spot on net 82.

Karin and Paula were cut a little on their handicaps whereas several had theirs going the wrong way.

The Seniors also had some close games in their annual Brian Abbott Foursomes with Mick Swann and Pete Casey taking the honours, on countback, with a credible 37 points, from John Purdy and Tony Strong.

Pete Pethebridge and Brian Thompson had to be satisfied with third place with 36 points.

Last week the Ladies competed in two competitions,

the first was a Greensomes to find the winners who would represent the Club in the County Run Warren Crocus

at Dawlish Warren in September.

Due to the very windy conditions, they played it over 15 holes. Only Anne Jarvis and Stella Thompson were available for Division 1 scoring 22 points.

Division 2 was well represented with Jill Wellington and Jo Hopgood taking the top spot with 20 points.

On Wednesday, in much better weather and a joy to be outside, they played the Foursomes in medal format with half the combined handicaps. Clear winners were Caroline Bond and Paula Heasman with a net 78.5, beating Anne Jarvis and Jill Wellington who finished on a net 84. Margaret Kenchington and Barbara Cummings were not far back in third place on a net 88.5.

Last Friday the Seniors were lucky with the weather in a well turned-out Monthly Medal competition. In Division 1 there was a great battle with the first three places only separated by one shot. Stuart Mackie, our Scratch Champion, was first with a net 71 on countback with Tony Strong. Brian Thompson was close on their heels with a net 72.

In Division 2 Octogenarian Gilbert Cox enjoyed some fine form to win with a net 73 with Pete Casey again on the podium coming second with a net 75, leaving Chris Read to take third place with a net 78.

Sadly, our Emerton Court team lost their away match with Mortehoe 4-1, meaning they were beaten overall by the very small margin of half a point. They fought bravely, however, and it could have gone either way.

Thanks must go to Brian Thompson for all his hard work for this competition.
