News in Seaton

The news this week that Seaton Community Hospital is on a list of sites that could be developed - producing 14 new houses - does not mean that closure is imminent. Planning officers were compiling a list of possible sites and there is currently no specific proposal.

However, the list is a salutory reminder that the hospital's future is not safe. Indeed, the papers note that "NHS property services have submitted the community hospital and have advised that there may be potential to make more effective use of the site, subject to health commissioning requirements".

Councillors from East Devon were united in their dismay that the district has been placed in the lowest tier for a government regeneration fund – with one joking that they should rebrand the area as a "red wall district".

The government last month created the Levelling Up Fund, which brings together the Department for Transport, the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Treasury to invest £4.8billion in high-value local infrastructure.

Presenting his report at the monthly meeting of Axmouth Parish Council, Cllr Ian Thomas, who represents the Trinity Ward on East Devon District Council, expressed his concern about allegations of bullying at EDDC which had come to light following a staff survey.

He said the purpose of the Scrutiny Committee was to be a "critical friend" and to hold the Cabinet to account, which he believed was not happening.
