Having just celebrated firework and bonfire celebrations, it seems apt that Beer Film Society's next movie screening will be 'The Rocket'.

But the feature film at the Mariners' Hall on Thursday, November 17 has nothing to do with Guy Fawkes and his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament!

Indeed, this 2013 film, written and directed by Australian film-maker Kim Mordaunt, is yet another first for for the society as it is set entirely in Northern Laos, and spoken in the Lao language.

The story is about a young Laotian boy, Ahlo, who is believed by his family to be cursed, a bringer of bad luck.

Ahlo battles on, however, making friends with an orphan and her wacky uncle, and comes to believe that if he can win the local firework competition with his homemade rocket he can hit back at his own bad luck.

It is a wonderful, uplifting film lasting just over 90 minutes and certainly went down well with the critics winning over 45 international awards including the Berlin, Tribeca and Sydney Film Festivals and has been sold to over 40 countries.

"A simple but charming, affecting and thought-provoking story, rich in atmosphere and local history, and beautifully acted by its young leads.' 4/5 Henry Fitzherbert (Daily Express (UK))

Tickets will be available on the door, costing £5 for members and £7 for guests. The bar will be open and Baboo Gelato ice creams will be on sale. Doors open at 6.45 and the film starts at 7.30pm.

The society's final screening of the year on December 8 will be 'Brian & Charles' (2022), the rather quirky British comedy directed by Jim Archer which won the Audience Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival (London).

And for all attending there will be a Christmas treat – courtesy of Beer Film Society!
