Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends has temporarily cancelled its weekly bingo events amid concerns over rising cases of COVID-19.

A statement from the League of Friends said: "Over the last couple of weeks the league has been notified that a number of our players plus some of our volunteers have been suffering from severe colds and COVID-19.

"We feel a great responsibility for our staff and patrons. It is an increasing challenge to ventilate the venues as government guidelines recommend and keep everyone warm at the same time, as people do not want doors and windows open.

"As we know a warm atmosphere is conducive to spreading germs. In addition, whilst it is not mandatory for people to wear face masks currently, to protect each other, we cannot insist on this.

"With the predicted forecast of extremely cold weather, which would make safe practice almost impossible, after lengthy deliberation we have taken the regrettable decision to postpone our bingo sessions at Colyford Memorial Hall on a Tuesday evening and the Masonic Hall in Seaton on a Friday afternoon for the next few weeks with a view to restart in the New Year.

"This has not been an easy decision, to stop one of our popular fundraising activities, however the safety of our volunteers and players must be our main concern.

"Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience and disappointment we know this decision may bring. Thank you for your support and understanding. We will be back as soon as we are safely able to do so."
