Nature along the Jurassic Coast – interpreted by three local artists – is the focus of this year's Devon Open Studios event from Saturday, September 11 to Sunday 26 at the Umborne Bridge Studio in Colyton.

The three artists have invited the public to join in by learning how to create a nature journal, watching a demonstration, or by joining a workshop.

Artist Hesta Singlewood and Seaton illustrator Alex Boon have joined with Sidmouth artist Anna Brewster for the two-week Devon Open Studios event.

All three artists have a particular focus on nature, each capturing the landscapes, flora, and fauna of the local area in their own style and different media, with brand new work offered for sale.

Hesta Singlewood is a folk artist and crafter who embraces the seasons to provide inspiration for her paintings.

She said: "The three of us were selected for inclusion in Wild East Devon's 2021 calendar and the accompanying exhibition, which was sadly cancelled due to COVID.

"We decided to do Devon Open Studios as we all share an affinity for finding joy and connection in nature, and we want to communicate this to our visitors."

Alex Boon is an artist and writer best known for his nature journals, which began in 2016 and describe many years of exploration and observation of local wild spaces, such as the Undercliffs reserve, Seaton Wetlands, and Holyford Woods.

During the last three COVID lockdowns, he also created the 'Lapine Botanica' series of rabbit illustrations, based on the flower names of the rabbits in Richard Adams' 'Watership Down'.

"I'm really excited to share my work with the local community and visitors at the Devon Open Studios event," he said.

"And I will be running a nature journaling workshop for anybody who'd like to learn how to get involved in this rewarding artistic hobby."

Anna Brewster is an ink and watercolour artist, known locally for her paintings of Sidmouth's dramatic coastline, and the fields and woods around the town.

She is looking forward to running workshops and demos from the studio during the event.

Anna explains: "Colyton is such a beautiful old town surrounded by stunning countryside, it's an inspirational place for us to work.

"The studio is right next to the river and we have a fab independent coffee shop as neighbours so we're looking forward to welcoming visitors not only to the studio, but also to this amazing location."

The three artists will be showcasing their work at Umborne Bridge Studio, Unit 1, Dolphin Street, Colyton (EX24 6LU), just a short walk from the tram stop and local shops.

Opening hours are 10am to 4pm every day from September 11 to 26. Accessible with ramp and following COVID-safe guidelines, parking available on site.

Seaton's Kamikaze Tortoise Studio to open doors

Seaton artist Julie Roberston will also be taking part in Devon Open Studios again this year.

Julie has now been at her uniquely named Kamikaze Tortoise Studio in Rogers Way, Seaton, for two years.

During her open studio she will be displaying her latest colourful work, as well as selling cards and giftware from just £2.50 upwards, serving cream teas and holding demonstrations.

Julie also produces sculptural pieces which have been shown at Sousouwest Gallery in Symondsbury, near Bridport, and online with The South West Academy.

Her studio will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm on September 12 and 13, from September 16 to 19 and from September 23 to 26.

You can find her at 7 Rogers Way, off off Barnards Hill Lane, Seaton (EX12 2FY) or email [email protected] for more details.
