Roads flooded as storm hits the Axe Valley

Local News by Francesca Evans 21st Jan 2021

Drivers should be aware that some local roads may still be flood following persistent, heavy rainfall last night (Wednesday).

Floor warnings were in place last night around the River Yarty from Yarcombe to Axminster.

Flooding of riverside properties, highways and fords in the surrounding area was anticipated, and livestock without access to higher ground was also said to be at risk.

Axminster fire services warned: "Only travel in this area if it is absolutely essential and never enter floodwater where you are unsure of the depth and especially if it is fast flowing.

"We will be closely monitoring the situation throughout the night and this message will be updated on Thursday morning or earlier if the situation changes."

Reports of flooding were also made in the notorious Whitford and Colyford areas as last night's storm hit.

Colyton fire crew were called to Whitford where a cable had become detached from a building in high winds, leaving the roads between the village and Shute and Colyton were impassable.

The AVMT bus service has apologised to passengers in the Whitford area who use the 885 bus service, which is still being affected following last night's flooding and may continue to be affected throughout the week as more rain is forecast.
