Beer's famous model railway manufacturing company Peco has recently opened a new 260 square metre factory space to expand productivity as global demand for its products increase.

The former indoor soft play area at Pecorama – the tourist attraction adjoining the Peco manufacturing site – has had a complete refit and is now a vital production area, including point assembly lines, miniature welding, packing and printing stations.

Peco has sold the soft play equipment to Seaton Tramway, with the hope it will reopen at a new venue soon.

The new factory allows extra space for production staff to work comfortably under changing COVID-19 guidance.

In late December, more than half of the production staff moved up from the original factory site, which opened in the 1970s.

The family-run company exports its Peco Model Railway Products to 35 countries worldwide and says it has seen a high demand for its products throughout the pandemic.

Michael Pritchard, chairman of Peco, said: "The former indoor soft play area has now been converted into a wonderful, bright and airy production space and it is a delight to work in.

"Over the past 18 months demand for our world-famous products has increased by as much as 30 per cent and it has been necessary to find new permanent facilities, and especially where we can continue to keep our staff safe at work.

"We're delighted we could do this on our own doorstep."

A further benefit of expanding its factory space is that Peco is now looking to increase its staff team too.

The company currently has four vacancies in the production department – a toolmaker, mould-setter/technician and four production workers.
