Described as a "masterpiece" by one prominent critic, the award-winning 'Belfast' is the next show for Beer Film Society.
Kenneth Branagh's semi-autobiographical film will be shown at the Mariners' Hall on Thursday, 16 as Beer Film Society attempts to follow up the success of 'The Rescue', which proved to be one of the most popular in its history with a 97 per cent audience rating.
But if you go by the reviews and the number of awards that the film has received, then the society believes 'Belfast' won't disappoint.
For a start, it earned Branagh an Oscar for best original screenplay – the story mirrors his upbringing – plus a BAFTA for outstanding British Film of the Year.
But it wasn't only the Hollywood and BAFTA judges who were impressed. The Times film critic Kevin Maher described 'Belfast' as a "masterpiece" and gave it the full five-star accolade.
"It's a movie of formal beauty, precise performances, complex and textured writing and enough comic one-liners and classic Van Morrison tracks to make you forget that you are watching a drama about seething sectarian hatreds."
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian also gave the film five stars.
"There is a terrific warmth and tenderness to Kenneth Branagh's elegiac, autobiographical movie about the Belfast of his childhood: spryly written, beautifully acted and shot in a lustrous monochrome... this film has such emotional generosity and wit and it tackles a dilemma of the times not often understood: when, and if, to pack up and leave Belfast?"
