Hip harpist comes to Seaton
Hip harpist Tara Minton will headline the next jazz supper at The Gateway Theatre in Seaton on Saturday, June 24.
Using her harp, Tara and her quartet promise a unique evening of music rooted in the jazz era of the 1950s, but with a modern twist.
Australian-born Tara will celebrate the music of Dorothy Ashby. Revered as the 'Queen of Jazz Harp', Dorothy was a true pioneer. She released 11 albums of her own and recorded with Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, Stevie Wonder and many more.
Her music used jazz, blues, classical and eastern music to create an exciting fusion. She, more than anyone, helped to popularise the harp both in jazz and in contemporary music.
The harp is enjoying a resurgence with a new generation of young jazzers, who are re-discovering the instruments's versatility and distinctive sound.
"I'm excited to be bringing together these fantastic musicians to Seaton," said Tara.
"Dorothy Ashby's work is an inspiration. We'll be creating something fresh that still pays homage to her legacy."
Stellar sax player Emma Rawicz will join Tara. A native of Devon, Emma is achieving national recognition for her adventurous playing.
"Dorothy was an incredible musician", said Emma.
"It's going to be an amazing night - I can't wait!"
Jazz Jurassica organiser Julie Sheppard added: "This event will be a "one-of-a-kind experience. We'll be dragging the harp out from the orchestra pit into the spotlight, centre stage. With the harp's unique sound and some incredibly inventive sax playing by Emma, this will be a night jazz fans won't want to miss."
This will be the third jazz supper at The Gateway promoted by Jazz Jurassica.
Julie added: "This is the only venue on this part of the Jurassic Coast where you can get a bit of Ronnie Scott magic without having to travel to Soho."
The evening will feature a new and improved food menu from Le Pisani restaurant in Seaton.
