The Gateway Theatre in Seaton has launched a fundraising appeal to help it purchase and install a new boiler.

The community venue, which hosts film screenings, live music and theatre, has launched an online GoFundMe campaign, initially aiming to raise £5,000 towards the new boiler.

The total cost of the new heating system is £24,827.34 and The Gateway has to fund 50% of this itself, with the other half coming from Seaton Town Council, which owns the building.

Manager Sophia Moseley said: "We hope you have enjoyed our programme since we reopened in September 2021. It has been a long haul, and we couldn't have done it without your support, but we have loved every minute of it and hope you have too. We have much more in the pipeline.

"But we also have a problem. The old boiler. As many of you will know, it can get a bit chilly in our auditorium, and when it gets really cold, we have to leave the heating on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The system is probably the original installation from the 1950s, and is on its last legs.

"Under our tenancy terms with the Seaton Town Council, we must pay 50% of the cost of a new system, and the quote they have been given is £24,827.34, which means we will have to find over £12,000.

"It also means we shall have to close the theatre for two weeks during the summer when the work is carried out. So it's a double whammy for us.

"We are doing everything we can to raise funds and are looking for grants, but it's not easy. We know times are tough, but if you are able to help in any way, it will make a big difference, and hopefully, you won't need to keep your winter coat on when you come along to enjoy one of our shows."

The online campaign has just launched and has already raised just over £500. If you would like to donate, visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/gateway-theatre-audience-needs-warming-up
