What better way to kick off 2023 than an evening with 'The King of Rock and Roll', Elvis Presley.

It is an opportunity to shake off the New Year blues, get your feet tapping and soak up the atmosphere from acclaimed director Baz Luhrmann, who serves up a real hit with his latest film Elvis (2022) promoted by Beer Film Society at the Mariners' Hall on Thursday, January 19.

The film recounts the life and music of Presley (Austin Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) from Presley's humble beginnings to his international stardom over a period of 20 years.

The film certainly struck a happy chord with the critics.

"Of the actors who have previously tried to bottle Elvis's lightning-like magic, none has come close to the physical, emotional, electrical energy that throbs through Austin Butler's titular performance here." Mark Kermode (The Observer) 5/5
"A spectacle as much as a story. Elvis's life, all shook up." Brian Viner (The Daily Mail) 4/5

With a running time of 159 minutes, Elvis is a longer film than usual and there will be a 10-minute interval during the film, when the bar will be open and Baboo Gelato ice creams will be on sale.

If you would like to book a seat or table – doors open at 6.45pm for a 7.30 start - then please reserve in advance by emailing [email protected] before Thursday, January 12.

Future screenings for Beer Film Society will be as follows:

  • February 16 - The Truffle Hunters (2021)
  • March 23 - To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
  • April 20 - Living (2022)
