East Devon District Council has released its vision for the landmark moridunum in Seaton

East Devon District Council has outlines a vision for the moridunum on Seaton seafront, as it advertises the landmark to potential developers.

The council is currently advertising a "unique opportunity" to acquire the long leasehold of Seaton Moridinum and former public toilets below, saying it would be the ideal location for a food or beverage operation development.

A design brief for interested parties has been published, showing how the dilapidated toilet block and sloped public walkway above could be refurbished as a cafe or restaurant.

In 2017, a proposal by Seaton Town Council to regenerate the seafront and moridunum was approved, however, the project was never implemented. The regeneration project was then included in East Devon District Council's recent bod for Levelling Up funding from the government, but this was unsuccessful so the authority is now looking to lease the toilet block and public realm above.

Behind the site, a private development of new and refurbished flats is underway, which the council's design brief says provides "the opportunity to reconsider the future of the moridunum and create a destination location along the seafront".

The brief outlines that any development should be one storey in height, with outdoor cafe seating space to the sides of the former toilet block and not on the top level. However, the ground floor should be raised to comply with flood risks and there is scope extend it further back through excavation or to widen the building, as long as the ramps either side are easily accessible for walkers, and there is no restriction on views from flats to the rear.

The council added: "The moridunum ramp is a much-loved and well-used feature of Seaton seafront. The roof top views, that take in the whole bay, are breathtaking.

"The regeneration of the ramp and the former WCs below is an integral part of the Seafront regeneration strategy. This is an exciting and ambitious development opportunity to create a community focal point along the promenade.
