The village of Colyford is looking forward to the return of its medieval Goose Fayre later this month – the first time the event will be held in three years following the coronavirus pandemic.

The event will be held on Saturday, September 24 with many of the usual stallholders are returning along with some new additions for 2022.

A procession of villagers in medieval dress will set off from The Elms at 1.30pm and will head to the fair site at Springfield on Seaton Road, for gates to open at 1.45pm. Entry costs £5 and is free for accompanied children under 14.

The fayre will include demonstrations of traditional country crafts, cider pressing and falconry, with plenty of entertainment and games for children, including Punch & Judy shows and riding the quintain. Highlights will include the traditional mummers play and the mock auction of geese

A wide variety of refreshments will also be available, including the traditional ram roast and the Wheelwright Inn will be running the bar.

Event programmes will be available at Colyford Post Office/Shop in the run up to the event and will be sold by street vendors during the parade. Free parking will be available in an adjacent field accessed off the A3052 opposite the Wheelwright Inn.

As always, the organisers are hugely grateful for the support received from the community and gladly welcome any additional helpers. Volunteers for setting up the field, the stalls and helping to shift bales of straw during the preceding week are much appreciated, as are donations for the for the refreshment tent, cakes and the 'gooseyola' stall.

To volunteer with the field team or any other aspect of the Goose Fayre, contact [email protected] or call Vaughan on 07932 721 777. Anyone able to provide cakes should contact Ann on [email protected] or call 07876 115 311 and deliver them to the fair ground on the morning of the event.

Colyford Memorial Hall will be open on Saturday, September 17 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm for borrowing of costumes. There is a large selection of medieval costumes available for men, women and children. This is also an opportunity for anyone to drop off any items for the tombola.
