Seaton MP Richard Foord is reminding people to check if they are eligible for cold weather payments as freezing temperatures strike Devon.

The forecast for a week of sub-zero temperatures means that some benefits claimants will receive £25 to help with their heating bills.

Cold weather alerts went out from the Dunkeswell Aerodrome weather station last week, which means eligible residents of postcodes across the Tiverton & Honiton constituency and other nearby areas will get the extra support.

The Liberal Democrat MP has urged people to make sure they get all the financial help they are entitled to.

Mr Foord said: "High energy bills and low temperatures are a dangerous combination, so it's really important that everyone gets the support they are entitled to.

"This includes Cold Weather Payments, which many who receive benefits are eligible for. If you are eligible, the money should go straight into your bank account.

"I would encourage everyone to check their eligibility by contacting the Pension Service, Jobcentre, or Universal Credit account if they think they're eligible but haven't received a payment yet.

"If you're worried about whether you'll be able to afford to heat your home this winter please don't suffer in silence – make sure you speak up."
