As part of Dementia Action Week, local home care company, Home Instead Exeter & East Devon, is teaming up with a range of local organisations and businesses to raise awareness.

The company, which provides award-winning home care, enabling residents to live independently in their own homes, has a long-established Community Talks initiative, sharing information, advice and support via free workshops covering key topics that matter in later life.

To coincide with Dementia Action Week, one organisation that the company is teaming up with is The Gateway Theatre in Seaton, which is hosting a Dementia Awareness workshop on Tuesday, May 23, from 10.30am to 12noon.

Speaking on behalf of The Gateway team, manager Sophia Moseley said: "We are really keen to be involved in this area of welfare for the community and in offering dementia friendly events in the future.

"Home Instead are offering us an ideal chance to help our staff and volunteers gain a better understanding of Dementia."

Currently, more than half of UK adults know someone who has been diagnosed with dementia, with East Devon having one of the highest rates of diagnosis in the country.

Home Instead Exeter & East Devon owner and managing director, Mark McGlade, who leads the Community Talks initiative, said: "As Dementia specialists, our care professionals are highly trained in not only how to care for, but also how to communicate with our clients living with dementia.

"We really feel we should share some of this knowledge, to make our communities safer and more welcoming places for us all, and our free Community Talks enable that.

"Businesses have an important part to play, and we have conducted a number of sessions for both large and small local organisations, and in healthcare settings including the RD&E.

"We are looking to run a series of open workshops across local towns and would invite those interested in making their teams 'dementia aware' to get in touch with us."

Home Instead workshops are completely free, last from 60 to 90 minutes and can be conducted in person or online. The care company are inviting those interested in finding out further information to call themarketing team on 01395 200600 or email [email protected] to express an interest.
