Seaton resident Alex Rowe and his brother-in-law Mike Milburn are gearing up for their 100-mile trek in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association this weekend.

The pair will be walking from Mike's home in Bournemouth to Alex's in Seaton on Saturday, April 24, covering 100 miles in a single stint - no stop over and carrying everything they need for the trek.

They have chosen to take on this challenge for MNDA as Alex's father and Mike's father-in-law, Martin Rowe, also from Seaton, was diagnosed with the disease in 2011.

The brothers-in-law say they have been overwhelmed with support so far, and have even received a personalised video message of from Sir Kevin Sinfield of Leeds Rhinos rugby team, who completed seven marathons in seven days in support for former team mate Rob Burrow, who is also fighting MND.

In the video, he described Alex and Mike's 100-mile trek as a "tough and brilliant challenge", wishing them the best of luck and saying the whole MND community and Leeds Rhinos were behind them.

Motor Neurone Disease is a life-shortening, rapidly-progressing neurological disease that attacks the nerves that control movement. It can affect the way you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe.

There is currently no cure but the association are fighting to find breakthroughs and to help improve the lives of people living with MND.

Fundraising is crucial to the charity as they are not government funded.

Alex said: "This is an amazing charity doing superb work to help find a cure for this horrible disease. MND is extremely close to the hearts of our family."

Alex and Mike were hoping to raise £1,000 in sponsorship but have already received donations of more than £4,000.

You can sponsor them by making a donation on their JustGiving page.
