A campaign has launched to protect an area of the green wedge on the outskirts of Colyton from future development.

Lewis Haye, formerly known as Seller's Grave, on the junction of Love Lane and Old Sidmouth Road in Colyton, will be sold by sealed tender on June 30 with a starting price of £60,000.

Campaigners have now launched a crowdfunding campaign with a target of £250,000 to ensure they can purchase the land for community use and protect it from future development.

The campaign page reads: "The land is green wedge and in this time of climate emergency we desperately want to protect this beautiful landscape from commercial development – to plant trees and wildflowers for the local community to enjoy, both now and in future years.

"The field enjoys panoramic views across the area, surrounded by hedges and mature trees and is a haven for wildlife. It is part of the history of the area and of the people and families who live here.

"We are looking to secure this field for the community and we don't have much time.

"Please make a pledge today, no matter how big or small – we have already received pledges from £10 to £1000. All pledges will be treated in the strictest confidence.

"If we get enough pledges to make a bid we will let you know, if not, your pledge will become null a void. We will keep you informed.

"Thank you so much for helping to save Colyton and Colyford countryside and our fragile environment.

"The land will be held in trust and fund are for the purchase of the land and legal fees associated with this and setting up of the trust to maintain the site."
