How to Make the Most of the Heatwave: Six Simple Ways to Enjoy the Sunshine

Make the most of the sunshine while it lasts with a summer day out.

After what feels like a very British summer of sunshine one minute and rain the next, a proper heatwave is on the way.

While temperatures in the high twenties might have some of us reaching for the fan and complaining about the heat, it's also a great excuse to make the most of the summer while it lasts.

From early morning walks to late evening picnics, here are six simple ways to enjoy the sunshine without letting the heat get the better of you.

1. Start Your Day Early

When temperatures are climbing, the morning can be one of the best times to get outside.

An early walk, run or cycle can be far more comfortable than heading out during the hottest part of the afternoon.

It's also a great way to make the most of the quieter roads and parks before everyone else wakes up.

2. Find Somewhere Near Water

There's a reason beaches, rivers and lakes become so popular when temperatures rise.

Whether you're heading to the coast, visiting a local outdoor swimming spot or simply finding somewhere with a stream or lake nearby, being close to water can make a hot day much more enjoyable.

Just remember to check that swimming is permitted and safe before taking the plunge.

3. Make Lunch an Outdoor Occasion

A heatwave is the perfect excuse to eat outside.

Pack a picnic, fire up the barbecue or simply take your lunch into the garden.

Keep plenty of water nearby and opt for lighter foods, such as salads, fruit and sandwiches, which can be much more appealing than a hot meal when temperatures are soaring.

4. Plan Around the Heat

It might sound obvious, but you don't have to be outside all day to enjoy the sunshine.

Try planning outdoor activities for the morning or early evening, when temperatures are more comfortable, and use the middle of the day to relax somewhere cool.

If you're heading out in the car, it's also worth checking your air conditioning before setting off. A car can become surprisingly hot when parked in direct sunlight, so giving the cabin time to cool down before a longer journey can make a big difference.

5. Take a Summer Road Trip

One of the easiest ways to enjoy a heatwave is simply to get out and explore.

You don't need to travel hundreds of miles. Find a country park, beauty spot, coastal town or village you've never visited and make a day of it.

Take the scenic route, stop for an ice cream and don't be afraid to make a few unplanned stops along the way.

If you're heading out for a longer journey, a quick car maintenance check beforehand can help make sure your tyres, fluids and other essentials are ready for the extra miles.

6. Make the Most of the Long Evenings

Perhaps the best thing about a heatwave is that the day doesn't have to end when the sun starts going down.

Meet friends for an evening walk, sit outside with a drink, have a barbecue or find somewhere with a great view and watch the sunset.

The cooler temperatures make it much easier to enjoy being outside, without feeling like you're melting.

Stay Safe in the Heat

As tempting as it is to make the most of every minute of sunshine, remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and take regular breaks from direct sunlight.

It's particularly important to keep an eye on children, older people and pets during very hot weather.

Make the Most of It

Heatwaves might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they're certainly a good excuse to make the most of summer.

Whether it's an early morning walk, a spontaneous day trip or a late evening barbecue, you don't need to spend a fortune or travel far to enjoy the sunshine.

And when the weather inevitably turns back to rain, at least we'll have made the most of it.
