A local organisation tackling loneliness and isolation among men is hoping to reach out to more of the community, thanks to generous funding raised by Co-op Members.
Overall, 4,500 local causes have received a share of £15 million from Co-op's Local Community Fund. Beer Men's Shed was selected as one of Seaton's local causes last year.
Following the Men's Shed concept first launched in Australia, Beer Men's Shed was set up in March 2019 to tackle loneliness and social isolation in rural East Devon.
Men from across the area now take part in regular workshops, learning and developing practical skills, such as word work, while also socialising, making new friends, improving mental and physical health, and finding a purpose within the community.
Chairman Chris Pickles said the idea for Beer Men's Shed came about after realising the different types of problems faced by men in the local community.
He explained that some had retired from work and found they didn't know many people, some were acting as carers for their wives or partners and felt guilty leaving the house, some lived in flats or apartments and didn't have the space for their own workshop or shed, and some simply found it difficult to socialise in new environments.
"We have men who come to every workshop session and some of them say it's a lifesaver."
"It's really touching because you see the men moving out of loneliness and isolation by coming to the shed, and once they're at the shed they feel more like they belong to the community," said Chris.
"We often see them pairing up as they learn from each other and make another friend."
Mr Pickles said that being chosen as one of Co-op's local causes had helped Beer Men's Shed to gain recognition within the community.
"If you look at the list of people and organisations that have donated to us, like the Co-op, it helps to add credibility to the organisation.
"People recognise that these organisations are themselves part of the community… it's not just about the short-term of who's walking through the workshop door but how we can reinforce our role in the community.
How does Payout work?
When Co-op Members buy selected Co-op branded products and services,2p for every pound spent is split between community organisations and local causes.
And it soon adds up. These members have helped raise £15 million for 4,500 causes this year.
From supporting projects that improve access to food and mental wellbeing, to education and employment opportunities for young people, the Local Community Fund has never been so vital.
